Gender Gap in Science Project: Final report

The International Science Council (ISC) Gender Gap in Science project has announced the publication of its final report A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical, Computing, and Natural Sciences .

The three-year project (2017–2019) was funded by the International Science Council (ISC) and involved eleven scientific partner organisations. The main goal of the project was to investigate the gender gap in STEM disciplines from different angles, globally and across disciplines.

Sir Simon Donaldson Awarded Wolf Prize

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to congratulate Professor Sir Simon Donaldson (Imperial College London) who has been awarded the Wolf Prize for Mathematics, jointly with Professor Yakos Eliashberg (Stanford University). Sir Simon receives the award for his contributions to differential geometry and topology.

The Wolf Foundation inaugurated the Wolf Prize in 1978, awarding the Prize to academics who have made ‘significant breakthroughs and extraordinary achievements in agriculture, mathematics, medicine, physics, chemistry and the arts’.

Professor Walter Hayman (1926-2020)

It is with regret that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learned of the death of Professor Walter Hayman FRS on 1 January 2020.  

Professor Hayman was a longstanding member of the LMS, having been elected to membership on 20 March 1947. He was awarded the аĿª½±De Morgan Medal in 1995 and was also awarded the аĿª½±Berwick Prize in 1955 and the Senior Berwick Prize in 1964. He was an аĿª½±Vice President from 1982-1984. Other major honours included his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1956.

International Day of Mathematics: March 14

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) has announced that the 40th General Conference of UNESCO has proclaimed that March 14 (pi day 3.14) will from now on be the International Day of Mathematics (IDM).

As March 14, 2020 is a Saturday, the international official launch will take place on Friday March 13, 2020. There will be two parallel international events:  in Paris at the UNESCO Headquarters, and at the  Einstein Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.
